Minimally invasive care, no large incisions.

Modern endoscopic procedures that treat stones and blockages through the body's natural passages, with day-care options where suitable.

What is endourology?

Endourology uses thin telescopes and fine instruments passed through the urinary passage, so there are no external cuts. It is most often used to treat stones in the ureter and kidney.

Because the approach is gentler than open surgery, many patients recover faster. The suitability of each procedure depends on your stone, your anatomy and your overall health, and this is explained before any decision is made.

Our procedures

Chosen to fit the stone, not the other way round.

1

Ureterorenoscopy (URS)

A telescope is passed up the ureter to see and treat a stone directly.

2

Flexible ureteroscopy

A flexible scope reaches stones inside the kidney that a rigid scope cannot.

3

Laser lithotripsy

Laser energy breaks the stone into fragments that are removed or can pass.

4

Day-care planning

Where safe, procedures are planned as day-care or short-stay to get you home sooner.

Your care pathway

Imaging and tests to plan the right procedure.

Clear instructions, anaesthesia review and consent.

Endoscopic treatment in the hospital operating theatre.

Recover

Aftercare guidance and a scheduled follow-up review.

Common questions

Will there be any cuts?

No external incisions are made for these procedures, since instruments pass through the natural urinary passage.

Will I need a stent afterwards?

Sometimes a temporary ureteric stent is placed to help healing. Your doctor will tell you beforehand if one is likely and when it will be removed.

What kind of anaesthesia is used?

These procedures are done under anaesthesia. The type is decided with the anaesthetist based on your health and is discussed before the procedure.

Urgent warning signs

Fever, severe pain or being unable to pass urine after a procedure needs urgent review. Please contact us or use the emergency department.
